Publish Your Story at disABLEDperson.com!

We at disABLEDperson.com would love for you to become a published author. You don’t have to be an accomplished writer to publish your story. What we are looking for here is the true story about your disability and how you are coping with it.

Write about any problems that you may have with your disability either from a physical, emotional or a financial standpoint. Write about how you overcame adversity pertaining to your disability. Write about getting the run around from an insurance company or anyone else. Do you get my drift? Write about anything that pertains to your disability. Why? Because that is what the rest of us want to hear. Your story and how you handled it may help other people in the same situation.

You may also submit any story that you have written to us. We will consider it for publishing on our site.

We have certain criteria that you will have to meet to become published on our web site.

  1. The story can be about some aspect of your disability or if you have a story that you want us to look at for publishing, let us know. We will be happy to take a look at it.
  2. There will not be any discussion about explicit sex in the any article published here.
  3. There will not be any vulgarity published here as well.
  4. The article should be between 500-2000 words. This is a guideline. However, more or less within reason will be accepted.
  5. All articles need to be sent to us electronically in the body of an e-mail. Due to the threat of viruses, attachments will not be opened..
  6. Any word processor may be used to write the article. However, the article must, I repeat, must be saved as a text file and then sent to us in the body of an e-mail.
    Note
:  Do not use any fancy fonts. No bold, italicized or underline used.

The publisher reserves the right to publish or not to publish any article for whatever reason. The publisher retains the rights to the article for a minimum of 30 days from the date of publishing. However, articles may be removed from the site whenever the publisher desires.

The author’s name will be displayed as the sole author of the article. The author agrees up front that they will not be paid for their article. The purpose of this section of our website is to allow you the Disabled Person to publish your story. Also note that although disABLEDperson.com is a copyrighted website, once we publish your story, it is visible to the world and may be copied.
We will not edit the story for spelling or grammar. So whatever way you write it, that is the way it will be published.

Happy writing!  Send your text file to disabledpersons@aol.com or disabledperson@hotmail.com

Publishers for the Disabled

  • We have had a number of requests over the last couple of months asking about books for the disabled. Because of those requests, we decided to do an article on publishers of disabled books.

  • Our research came up with four publishers that deal strictly with books about the disabled community.

Brookespublishing.Com The URL for them is http://www.brookespublishing.com   The site is a very friendly site that I believe is laid out nice. Brookes Publishing was founded in 1978 by Mr. Paul Brookes with his family’s kitchen table being their first headquarters. 21 years later, they are a highly respected publishing company with resources in the following fields: Early childhood Early intervention Inclusive and special education Developmental disabilities Learning disabilities Behavior Mental health.  Their titles range from graduate and undergraduate-level textbooks, professional references, and practical resources to curricula, assessment tools, and family guidebooks and videos. They currently have more than 250 titles in print and publish 35-40 new books every year. Their president is Mr. Paul H. Brookes and they are headquartered in Baltimore MD. In our opinion, their site is set up very user friendly. In the left-hand column, under e-catalog, click on books and videos and follow the links to the book you want to review. All in all a nice site.

Resources for Rehabilitation.  Resources for Rehabilitation are to be found at http://www.rfr.org   When you bring up their site, the first thing that you notice is that they are accessible to the visually impaired. No beauty design awards here. However, very functional and wonderful for the visually impaired. They claim to be the best source for publications and training programs that enable people with disabilities and chronic conditions to remain independent. Their highly rated publications provide valuable information about the most prevalent conditions that cause disability. Their site lists 10 titles with descriptions of each. Also, in addition to the books described on the web page, they produce a series of large print materials designed for distribution to clients and patients. This site is well worth checking out.

York Press.  York Press can be found at http://www.yorkpress.com   The site appears very clean and professional. York Press is a publisher of books and language development and disabilities, especially dyslexia, and about hearing impairment. Their books are, for the most part, aimed toward the professional or scholar working in one of these areas. However, many of them are suitable for the layman, and a few are written with parents in mind. One of their pages is called books by category, which separates their catalog alphabetically. This in our opinion a very helpful tool. This too is a site worth checking out.

Woodbine House.  Woodbine House can be found at http://www.woodbinehouse.com   Woodbine House publishes The Special-Needs Collection, a series of almost 50 books on disabilities and related topics, including ADD, autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, learning disabilities, spinal bifida, early intervention, inclusion, special education, and more. Since 1985 they have prided themselves on publishing books of the highest quality and value for parents, children, therapists, health care providers, and teachers. Over the years, Woodbine House has received many accolades from the disability community for their books. They are located in Bethesda, MD. Their site is professional and clean. They also have a subject and title index page with breaks down the books alphabetically. This too is a site worth checking.
