Carrie Writes
Affects of tense times
Carrie Tynan

On September 11, 2001 I was horrified along with the rest of the nation as I
watched the tragic events unfold in New York City, Washington DC and
Pennsylvania. My heart soon filled with sadness thinking of all the people
who had lost their lives and their loved ones who were grieving them. In a
split second our society change from dealing with terrorist to keeping our
world safe for all to live in freedom. These attacks and the current state
of our nation have caused many emotional and stress trauma. People with
psychiatric disabilities face difficulties from viewing and reading about
the events causing panic attacks, depression and fearful anxiety attacks.
There are counselors and support groups available to help people cope.  The
war on terrorism is very difficult on children especially those with family
in the military. The television images of war and attacks can be very scary
causing nightmares and heighten fears. It is the adult job to monitor
television viewing, offer reassurance and answer questions about what is
happening.  More importantly we must provide a safe and loving environment
to ensure emotional stability in our children.  Even during these tense
times it is important to live out our daily lives choosing freedom over
fear.  Every day I pray for our nation safety and for our troops fighting
the war against terrorism.  Live each day cherishing the time I spend with
family and friends.
