Joanne's Prom
By Joanne
From Joanne-Wheelchair bound-Funny thing, I thought that finding a date for my prom was
going to be a difficult thing. It turned out wonderful though. I asked this boy Bob from
my church whom I had known for a couple of years. We've always been friends but I never
thought that he would say yes to taking me to my senior prom. My prom night turned out to
be incredibly wonderful. I was so excited that I woke up a couple of hours earlier than I
need to that morning. School ended at 12:00. As always, my mom was there to pick me up.
"Where to" I blurted out, mom said lunch first and then a hair appointment at
1:00. I wanted my hair to be perfect. After a couple of hours it came out really nice. At
least that is what I thought.
We were running late so I didn't have as much time as I thought to get ready. Before I
knew it Bob was there. I wanted to look great but I was self conscious because of the
wheelchair. I thought just for one night if I could get out of that thing. Anyway, I made
my grand entrance by speeding down the hall into the living room. The first thing my date
said was how beautiful I looked. From that moment on, I became totally relaxed and had the
most wonderful time.
My prom took place on a boat. It was totally romantic. The view at night of the city with
all the lights was really nice. Bob did the honors of wheeling me up the ramp and we went
straight upstairs to the top deck to take pictures. It was totally windy and my hair
became totally messed up. Bob started laughing. All the preparation had blown away. Next
up were the pictures. So many were taken that I saw spots the rest of the night. From
there, everyone went downstairs to the dance floor. Suddenly, I felt kind of strange. I
can't dace in this chair. Bob was so cool, the first dance was a slow one. He took me out
on the dance floor and gently rocked the chair to the music. For the fast songs, he spun
me around to the beat. I'll remember that night for the rest of my life.
