I Dont Want To Be A Burden!! -Louis Poessel Dear Disability
Resource: My story is
much like many I am sure you have heard before. I am a college educated 53 year old white
married family man who was injured in a "workplace accident" this
past January of 2002. My former employer did not have Workers
Compensation Insurance or liability insurance at the time of my accident....however a
short month later he did subscribe. The injuries I sustained in the accident proved to be
most serious and I received a Permanent Total Disability Parking Permit and
am now receiving Social Security Disability. My former employer refuses to
pay any of the medical bills that resulted from my accident and lengthy recovery. The
medical insurance that the employer provided refuses to pay because the accident was a "workplace
accident." My employer
ordered me to return to work within three weeks of my accident and later refused the
medical letter of a duly licensed Texas Physicians Assistant who is also the Clinic
Director in my hometown of Palacios. This My personal
savings are exhausted as I have had to pay all costs of prescriptions, office
examinations, medical bills, travel and related costs of extensive medical visits and
testing since January. I have very little to look forward to in life as the result of my
accident and depression has become my greatest enemy. I am under the care of
a physician and see a counselor in regard to depression. My medical team combined with
medication make my life bearable but the quality is gone. There remains much in the way of
recovery. Extensile dental work must be done to repair damage as a result of the accident
but I lack the funds. With the exception of Social Security Disability which
provides me with a monthly check, every agency designed to deal with the disabled has
offered sympathy but little more. Each resource contacted relies upon the Judicial System,
other state and federal agencies, local agencies, or the private sector to deal directly
with the disabled. Most of the organizations that deal directly with the disabled do so
only when a disabled person has reached the poverty level. I keep
thinking that something good will come from all this.....but it has not yet. There must be
an agency somewhere in our great nation that can do more than show sympathy. There must be
many disabled persons that feel as I do......we are in limbo because there is really no
place to turn. My disability was the result of negligence on the part of my former
employer and still there is no place to turn. I do not want to remain a burden for my
family and for this nation. Please direct me to the correct agency if you are able. I will
appreciate your cooperation and reply. Louis Poessel 517 Mertie (361)
