SECRETARY II (STEP UP PROGRAM) BI‑WEEKLY SALARY RANGE: $2,120.00 - $2,513.60 APPROXIMATE MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $4,593.33 - $5,446.13
A properly completed Supplemental Questionnaire and a certificate of severe disability from the Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 5:00 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing (the DOR certificate may be faxed to 510-272-6424 attn: STEP UP Coordinator). Postmarks are not accepted. Failure to submit either of these documents will result in disqualification.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS: THIS IS A STEP-UP POSITION. Positions in the STEP UP Program are designated for individuals with severe disabilities who are not currently employed by Alameda County. While such positions are not subject to examination, candidates are subject to a one-year evaluation period. Upon satisfactory completion of the one-year performance evaluation, the appointee will transition to regular, classified Civil Service status.
THE POSITION(S): A Secretary II reports to and relieves a County administrative official of administrative details and maintains continuous responsibility for a complex clerical operation. A Secretary II may coordinate agenda preparation and schedule regulatory County Board or Commission meetings; maintain confidential management information files; assign and plan workload priorities and deal directly with a variety of governmental officials and the general public.
THE REQUIREMENTS: These are entrance requirements for admission to the STEP-UP Program process, which is competitive.
EXPERIENCE: The equivalent of three years of increasingly responsible clerical experience comparable to the County's Secretary I classification that requires a typing proficiency of not less than 40 net words per minute AND
A certificate of severe disability from the Department of Rehabilitation must be turned in by 5:00 pm on the last day for filing to be considered for this recruitment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Proficiency in word processing is highly desirable. All candidates must be able to type at a speed of not less than 40 net words per minute. Candidates may submit a typing certification, dated within the last six (6) months, from a local college, employment agency, or adult school, on their respective letterhead indicating a typing speed of at least 40 net words per minute and accuracy rate.
The evaluation may include but may not be limited to: KNOWLEDGE OF modern office practices and procedures including business correspondence, organization and functions of local, state, or local government agency record keeping systems and standard office equipment operations; correct English usage, including spelling and grammar; business letter writing and proper format for typed materials; word processing and/or spreadsheet applications; principles of managing and coordinating secretarial aspects of a large or complex program. ABILITY TO perform difficult clerical work involving independent judgment; type with speed and accuracy at not less than 40 words per minute; prepare clear and comprehensive reports; draft, compose and edit correspondence from brief oral or written instructions, using word processing applications; speak clearly and concisely to obtain and relay information; identify and correct errors in English usage, grammar, and mathematical calculations in a variety of documents; organize and prioritize work load; complete work under time deadlines; learn to interpret and apply laws, rules, and written; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the general public; evaluate demands on an Administrator’s time; arrange his/her schedule accordingly; work with officials and the general public in routine, emergency, and emotional situations; take responsibility and use good judgment in recognizing scope of authority; assist in devising and keeping office records of a confidential nature and maintain confidentiality. THE STEP-UP PROGRAM PROCESS CONSISTS OF the following: A review of candidates' applications and supplemental questionnaires to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements will move on to the next step in the process, being placed on the eligible list.
